World Blood Donor Day

Category: Day
World Blood Donor Day takes place on 14 June each year. The aim is to raise global awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products for transfusion and of the critical contribution voluntary, unpaid blood donors make to national health systems.

The day also provides an opportunity to call to action to governments and national health authorities to provide adequate resources and put into place systems and infrastructures to increase the collection of blood from voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors.

Safe blood and blood products and their transfusion are a critical aspect of care and public health. They save millions of lives and improve the health and quality of life of many patients every day. The need for blood is universal, but access to blood for all those who need it is not. Blood shortages are particularly acute in developing countries.

Objectives of observing the World Blood Donor Day - To celebrate and thank individuals who donate blood and to encourage those who have not yet donated blood to start donating.

- To highlight the need for committed, year-roundblood donation
- To maintain adequate supplies and achieve universal and timely access tosafe blood transfusion.
- To focus attention on donor health and thequality of donor care as critical factors in building donor commitment and a willingness to donate regularly.

Every few seconds, someone, somewhere, needs blood. Health is a human right; everyone in the world should have access to safe blood transfusions, when and where they need them. Let us understand the blood types and components of blood. There are 4 main blood groups (types of blood) – A, B, AB and O.

Your blood group is determined by the genes you inherit from your parents. Each group can be either RhD positive or RhD negative, which means in total there are 8 blood groups.

Antibodies and antigens - Blood is made up of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets in a liquid called plasma. Your blood group is identified by antibodies and antigens in the blood. Antibodies are proteins found in plasma. They're part of your body's natural defences.
