» Significance of Narali Purnima (नराली पूर्णिमा ) in Maharastra

Maharashtra is a place that is surrounded by the Arabian Sea and half the population resided near the coast line is largely depended on sea food. Fishermen go out regularly towards sea to earn thy lively hood. The other half portion of the Maharashtra visit this sea coast to celebrate Narali Purnima, the day when people pay respect to sea. Narali Purnima is celebrated on the month of Shravan and on full moon day.

People living near the coastline on this day celebrate this festival with great enthusiasm. According to the myth, it is believed that Varuna on the sea god protect sailor and the fisherman from danger. During the day of festival there is a large crowd on the sea shore to offer prayer to the sea god. Narali (coconut) is the main divine fruit that is being offered on this day.  This fruit is known for its nourishment quality and is largely used as food ingredients down south.  There is huge fair that take place across the sea shore during this festival.

 

This festival marks the beginning of fishing season and fisherman pray to sea God to bless them for the good livelihood throughout year. Fishermen’s during this day organize fair and decorate their boats and go towards the sea. People enjoy this festival with great enthusiasm and sweet dishes along with coconut as being served to friends and relatives.
