» Resons Or Story Behind Dhanteras Celebration

Even though prayers are offered to the deity Lakshmi on the auspicious day of Dhanteras, the story behind dhanteras celebration deals with the Hindu God of death, Yama. Our ancestor told us that the sixteen year old child of King Hima was predestined to die on the fourth day after his marriage ceremony. As per the boy's horoscope this has been foretold by an astrologer. Still, though his wife disagreed to accept this fortune for her husband.

On the fourth day of marriage of both of them, she hadn’t allowed her husband to sleep. She laid all the ornaments and pots of the house, including a horde of silver and gold coins at the doorway of her husband's chamber. The whole room was vibrantly lit with a huge number of lamps and the young lady i.e. his wife too stayed conscious all night singing songs and significant stories.

Yama came indoors at the chamber in the guise of a serpent, in order to claim his butt However, the dazzling brightness of the lights blinded him and made it unfeasible for him to come into the Prince's room. He climbed on top of the ornaments placed at the entrance and spent the night enchanted by the melody of the songs the wife sang. When morning came, he left quietly, without taking the Prince. Thus, the wife was victorious in saving her husband. In this concern, Dhanteras is also known as Yamadeepdan.

On Yamadeepdan or Dhanteras, lamps are left on fire throughout the night as a form of reverence to Yama. It is also the same night when people light lamps and float them down a river, in memory of their ancestors.
