» Significance of Goverdhan Puja in Mathura and nearby States

The term “Goverdhan” is driven from two words Go and Vardhan, Go means for cow and Vardhan means for nourishment. In another meaning go stands for senses and vardhan means for mind towards Lord Krishna

As illustrated in Vishnu-Puran, citizens of Gokul used to enjoy themselves in a festival which is in credit of Lord Indra and worshipped Indra after the finish of each monsoon season but Krishna blocked them from present prayers to Lord Indra who is in tremendous anger immerse Gokul. But lord Krishna saved his hometown Gokul by lifting head high the Govardan Mountain with his little feel of finger and protected men and women from the rain. On the day of Kartik Shukla Pratipada, one should wipe the whole body with oil and take bath in the morning time. Thenafter, Govardhan Puja (Annakoot Puja) ought to be done. Govardhan, which is maden of grains, is called ‘ANNAKOOT’. It is worshipped with the contributions of Paadya-Arghyay, Gandh, Pushp, Dhoop, Deep, Naivedya, Aachman, Taambool. Dakshina respectively. 

In temples especially in Mathura and Nathadwara, the deities are given milkbath, dressed in shining attires with ornaments of dazzling diamonds, pearls, rubies and other precious stones. This Govardhan Puja has an significance of its own.
