Hornbill Festival Category: Festival
Celebrated In: India

The tribes in the hilly regions of India are famous for their unique customs, traditions and way of life. In remote areas, the indigenous tribes live totally cut off from the outside world and it is especially so in the hills of Nagaland. So the state government organizes the Hornbill Festival to bring all the tribes closer and to help them interact with each other.

It is celebrated in the first week of December every year and is an opportunity for the different tribes of Nagaland like the Chakhesangs, the Angamis, the Kukis, the Kacharis, the Konyaks, the Sumis, the Changs, the Lothas and the Pochurys to intermingle and socialize together.

All these diverse hill tribes live in remote areas. This festival gives them an opportunity to interact with other tribes. The Government of India has declared the festival a National Event, attesting to its popularity.

he Hornbill Festival is attended by all of Nagarland's major tribes. It features traditional arts, dances, folk songs, and games. All this takes place amidst immaculate replicas of tribal hutments, complete with wood carvings and hollow log drum instruments, which are beat in haunting symphony at the end of the day. There are plenty of handicraft stalls, food stalls, and heady rice beer to indulge in as well.

In the evenings after sundown, the main attraction is the Hornbill National Rock Concert. Bands from all over the country come to compete. This is followed by a night market in town.
