Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated on the 2nd of October as the birth anniversary of great Mahatma Gandhi, popularly known by the name ‘Father of the Nation’. This festival is celebrated with great respect and reverence all across India. Mahatma was the person who played the most important role for making India free from the British rule. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, also known as ‘Bapu’, was born on the 2nd of October 1869 in Gujarat. Gandhi was a follower and preacher of truth and non-violence. He initiated the ‘Satyagraha’ movement to achieve freedom for India. He lived a very simple life and believed that independence can only be attained through non-violence.

Till the year 1914, Gandhi acted as a leader for the Indians in South Africa against the British rule over India. Later, Mahatma Gandhi became as the forerunner of the Indian freedom struggle. From that time to when India achieved independence, Gandhi managed to gather the whole nation behind him. India became independent in the year 1947, and soon after that, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated, and the 78-year-old ‘Father of the Nation’ left the country and this world.

On Gandhi Jayanti, the Prime Minister and President of India along with many other distinguished leaders pay homage at the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi, the place where this great leader was cremated, which is known as Raj Ghat. Gandhi Jayanti is declared as a holiday all over the country. All the educational institutions and offices remain closed on this day. Various prayers and sermons are read out from the sacred books belonging to every religion in memory of Mahatma Gandhi. Also the song ‘Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram’ is sung frequently during all the meetings that are held in his memory, which was very much liked by the Mahatma. Congregational prayers are also held in different state capitals of the country. Gandhi Jayanti is followed all across the country in both governmental and non-governmental organizations. The whole nation is immersed in deep reverence for this great man.
