Bangali new year or ‘nababorsho’ is the first day of the month of Baisakh of the Bengali year. To celebrate this special day, people decorate their houses with fresh flowers and draw rangolis also known as ‘Alpana’ and is made out of rice powder. An earthen pot with the symbol of Swastika is kept in the middle of rangoli. It is believed to be auspicious. Wearing new clothes, people exchange sweets and other gifts among friends and relatives.

On this day the idols of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi are worshipped for the well-being and prosperity of all the family members. It also is a significant day among Bengali businessmen where they make new accounts book known as Haal-khata. To make the celebration joyous, people organise various cultural programmes and competitions for kids, eating traditional Bengali food is the main focus.
