The day of Kartick Purnima is often referred to as Raas Purnima in West Bengal when Raas Leelas of Lord Sri Krishna are enacted.

Lord Krishna during his sojourn in this Earth had various pastimes which are revered as Raas Leela. Enacting these or portraying these in various art forms is a common ritual and practice.

Fairs or mela as they are called are held. These Raas melas usually start on the day of Kartick Purnima. The Raas Mela at Coochbehar is probably one of the oldest fairs of India. Apart from the exuberance of the fair, Coochbehar Raas Mela is also famous because of religious activities in a temple – the Madan Mohan Bari. Madan Mohan refers to Lord Krishna and this is Lord Krishnas temple built more than a hundred years ago by Maharaja Nripendra Narayan, descendent of the royal Koch Dynasty.
